This series of articles from Science includes a wide range of advice for PhD students, from attending meetings to planning and time management. Some of the articles may not be relevant for everyone, but there are some good suggestions.
Group Dynamics
The article titled "Group Dynamics" is great. It's a must read for first year graduate students. I believe that most students choose a lab based on the science, with a secondary factor being whether or not the PI is "hands-on" or "hands-off". This article gets at a much more important factor, the learning environment. The PhD is not as much about doing science as it is about learning how to do science, although you have to do it to graduate. Group dynamic is probably the most important factor in a successful and enjoyable PhD experience.
